Camille Mitchell
Arts Award
Throughout her career, architect Camille Mitchell has contributed to the design of various buildings that have literally shaped Toronto’s skyline. However, it is in the ongoing pursuit for equality and opportunity in architecture where Camille shines as a leader. As an Associate with SvN Architects + Planners in Toronto, she leverages her achievements to advocate for underrepresented groups to be involved in the design of their built environments. Her innate ability to inspire and guide others, mobilizing volunteers and nurturing a sense of unity, is a defining trait.
Camille is a founding member and inaugural Executive Committee Chair of the independent organization Building Equality in Architecture Toronto (BEAT), which fosters community, advocacy, and mentorship for women in design. Under her leadership, sister chapters developed in the Prairies and the Atlantic Provinces. Camille played a pivotal role in founding the Black Architects and Interior Designers Association. BAIDA is dedicated to enhancing Black representation in Canadian design. As Chair, she collaborates across industries and communities to dismantle societal barriers. Recently, Camille joined the family, friends and fellow creatives of the late beloved interior designer Nike Onile to launch a foundation that honours her legacy. The Nike Onile Art and Design Foundation supports emerging Canadian artists and designers, fostering diversity in art and design.
In academia, Camille served on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. She also is an Advisory Board member for the University of Waterloo School of Architecture’s Racial Equity and Environmental Justice program. In this capacity, she offers insight and oversight as the school revises its curriculum and launches new initiatives, ensuring a commitment to inclusivity and social justice in architectural education.
